Loads of Possibilities

There's probably already a firewall/router built into your cable/DSL modem. So why bother with m0n0wall? Here's why: m0n0wall offers complete control over loads of features that your DSL or cable modem's built-in firewall/router device doesn't have. You can override DNS for a host (or an entire domain); create a wireless access point with a captive portal (think web-based login for a free wifi hotspots); build very specific access controls based on ports and IP addresses (e.g. to block P2P traffic at work); create a VPN (connect two m0n0walls at different offices to form a secure virtual private network); create users that are allowed to log in to your network remotely (using PPTP); and tons more.

What We'd Change

We'd make m0n0wall support wireless USB hardware! But it does support most PCI wireless hardware, so no problems. This is a killer program that will convert an outdated PC into a firewall appliance that offers most of the functionality of very expensive commercial solutions. One thing we'd love to see is a m0n0wall VPN client for Windows that is open source, (but this isn't up to m0n0wall).
