If you want to view your movies on a personal device such as an iPod or any other type of handheld media player, you will need to convert it to a file. Handbrake will accept a DVD and convert it to a compressed video file (a few formats are available) that will play on your device.
Conclusion
We have not used Handbrake to convert anything other than home-made movies, but it worked like a charm. The presets make it very easy to guess which type of file is compatible with the target device, (e.g. PS3, or PSP) which eliminates the trial-and-error of finding what works.
