AskoziaPBX is a complete PBX (Private Branch Exchange) on a small live CD that can be installed to your hard drive. It makes Asterisk, the number one open source PBX, install in minutes. Coupled with a little bit of telephony hardware or a SIP phone and a VOIP gateway account, you can have a complete phone system running in less than half an hour using AskoziaPBX.
Fast and Easy Setup
AskoziaPBX is incredibly easy to install and set up. In fact, users of m0n0wall and FreeNAS will recognize the familiar web-based interface and will feel right at home. The installation takes less than 5 minutes, and the setup takes about 15 more. Although it offers less features than Trixbox, Askozia is far less difficult to install and operate. If you are trying to set up a PBX for the first time, this is where to start. We were able to set up a functioning PBX with a Digium TDM400P 4-FXO card to handle incoming call, outbound calls, and voicemail for four phone lines in about 20 minutes.
What We'd Change
This is an exciting and promising project with immense potential. AskoziaPBX needs only two features to be ready for prime-time: IVR and a HUD interface. For those not familiar, IVR is a call menu system ("press 1 for sales") and HUD is a way to transfer calls by dragging and dropping (e.g. compatibility with HUDlite). Trixbox, though bloated and scary to upgrade, currently gets used because it does provide these features. AskoziaPBX, which is probably one-tenth the size of Trixbox, is almost its equal. Once these simple features are added, there will be no reason to fumble with Trixbox.
